A note on the connectedness locus of the families of polynomials Pc(z)=z n - cz n-j Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arteaga,Carlos; Alves,Alexandre.
Let j be a positive integer. For each integer n > j we consider the connectedness locus Mn of the family of polynomials Pc(z) = z n - cz n-j, where c is a complex parameter. We prove that lim n→∞ Mn = D in the Hausdorff topology, where D is the unitary closed disk {c;|c|<1}.

A SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF QUALITY OF LIFE INDICES ACROSS COUNTRIES AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of interrelationships among the determinants of the Quality of Life (QOL). We show that various measures of well-being are highly sensitive to domains of QOL that are considered in the construction of comparative indices, and how measurable inputs into the well-being indicators are aggregated and weighted to arrive at composite measures of QOL. We present a picture of conditions among the 43 countries of the world with respect to such interrelated domains of QOL as the relationship with family and friends, emotional well-being, health, work and productivity, material well-being, feeling part of one's community, personal safety, and the quality of environment. On the basis of Borda Rule and the...

AMMI analysis to evaluate the adaptability and phenotypic stability of sugarcane genotypes Scientia Agricola
Silveira,Luís Cláudio Inácio da; Kist,Volmir; Paula,Thiago Otávio Mendes de; Barbosa,Márcio Henrique Pereira; Peternelli,Luiz Alexandre; Daros,Edelclaiton.
Sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) is one of the most important crops in Brazil. The high demand for sugarcane-derived products has stimulated the expansion of sugarcane cultivation in recent years, exploring different environments. The adaptability and the phenotypic stability of sugarcane genotypes in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil, were evaluated based on the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) method. We evaluated 15 genotypes (13 clones and two checks: RB867515 and RB72454) in nine environments. The average of two cuttings for the variable tons of pol per hectare (TPH) measure was used to discriminate genotypes. Besides the check RB867515 (20.44 t ha-1), the genotype RB987935 showed a high average TPH (20.71 t ha-1), general...

Almeida Neto,Luiz A.; Pandorfi,Héliton; Moraes,Alex S.; Guiselini,Cristiane; C. Júnior,José J. Florentino.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane is considered one of the main alternatives for biofuel production and an important product of Brazilian agriculture, so it is indispensable to adopt new techniques for its cultivation and management. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of the quality of supplemental lighting, based on light-emitting diode (LED), on the acclimation of pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings in a protected environment. The experimental design was completely randomized, consisting of three supplemental LED lighting systems, with light proportions of 90% red + 10% blue (R:B 90/10), 80% red + 20% blue (R:B 80/20) and 70% red + 30% blue (R:B 70/30), and a control, with natural solar radiation, with 5 replicates. Multivariate principal component...

Characterization and selection of "Maracujá-do-mato" (Passiflora cincinnata mast) morphoagronomic descriptors Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Dutra,Jéssica Alves; Oliveira,Antonio Carlos de; Porto,Antonio Carlos Mota; Mathias,Jéssika Layanne Moreira.
Abstract The present study consists of the in situ characterization and selection of minimal morphoagronomic descriptors in Passiflora cincinnata genotypes. Forty-one quantitative morphoagronomic descriptors were used, divided in “Plant and Leaf”, “Floral” and “Fruit”. Principal component analysis were used to eliminate descriptors that were less important in the study of multivariate dissimilarity among genotypes. The formation of groups was carried out using Ward’s hierarchical grouping method. The importance of the characters was estimated through the participation of the components by Singh’s method (1981) in order to verify the similarity between lower participation variables in the components. For the set of descriptors “Plant and Leaf” the...

Choosing components in the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) models Scientia Agricola
Dias,Carlos Tadeu dos Santos; Krzanowski,Wojtek Janusz.
The additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) models allows analysts to detect interactions between rows and columns in a two-way table. However, there are many methods proposed in the literature to determine the number of multiplicative components to include in the AMMI model. These methods typically give different results for any particular data set, so the user needs some guidance as to which methods to use. In this paper we compare four commonly used methods using simulated data based on real experiments, and provide some general recommendations.

Comparison between multivariate methods applied for the evaluation of genetic divergence in Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) BABT
Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos; Kageyama,Paulo Yoshio.
Several multivariate methods have been used in divergence analyses of populations. Consistency and relative association among four methods were assessed using a 5 x 5 complete-diallel data involving cacao cultivars. Over a 5-year period, five cultivars were analyzed based upon five yield components. In assessing the divergence of parents only the data obtained from five cacao cultivars were analyzed. Four multivariate statistics presented close association when considered in pairs, in this case the Mahalanobis' (D²) with the mean Euclidean distance obtained from canonical variates (d cv), and mean Euclidean distance (d e) with the mean Euclidean distance obtained from principal components (d pc). In both cases, high correlations (r > 0.95) were...

Estimating Large-Scale Factor Models for Economic Activity in Germany: Do They Outperform Simpler Models? AgEcon
Dreger, Christian; Schumacher, Christian.
This paper discusses a large-scale factor model for the German economy. Following the recent literature, a data set of 121 time series is used via principal component analysis to determine the factors, which enter a dynamic model for German GDP. The model is compared with alternative univariate and multivariate models. These models are based on regression techniques and considerably smaller data sets. Out-of-sample forecasts show that the prediction errors of the factor model are smaller than the errors of the rival models. However, these advantages are not statistically significant, as a test for equal forecast accuracy shows. Therefore, the efficiency gains of using a large data set with this kind of factor models seem to be limited. Diese Arbeit...

Silva,Karla Jorge da; Pastina,Maria Marta; Guimarães,Claudia Teixeira; Magalhães,Jurandir Vieira; Pimentel,Leonardo Duarte; Schaffert,Robert Eugene; Pinto,Marcos de Oliveira; Souza,Vander Fillipe de; Bernardino,Karine da Costa; Silva,Michele Jorge da; Borém,Aluízio; Menezes,Cicero Beserra de.
ABSTRACT: Sorghum breeding programs are based predominantly on developing homozygous lines to produce single cross hybrids, frequently with relatively narrow genetic bases. The adoption of complementary strategies, such as genetic diversity study, enables a broader vision of the genetic structure of the breeding germplasm. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of sorghum breeding lines using structure analysis, principal components (PC) and clustering analyses. A total of 160 sorghum lines were genotyped with 29,649 SNP markers generated by genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS). The PC and clustering analyses consistently divided the R (restorer) and B (maintainer) lines based on their pedigree, generating four groups. Thirty-two B and...

Martuscello,Janaina Azevedo; Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Jank,Liana; Cunha,Daniel de Noronha Figueiredo Vieira da; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da.
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the genetic divergence between hybrids obtained from 10 sexual genitors of the Panicum maximum breeding program at Embrapa Beef Cattle. For this, the following morphological descriptors were used: plant height, growth habit, leaf aspect, leaf waxiness, hair density on the sheath (DePB) and blade (DePL), degree of hardiness of the hairs on the leaf sheath (DuPB) and blade (DuPL) and length of hairs on the sheath and blade. The characteristics growth habit and waxiness were not included in the analysis for being invariant. The phenotypic correlations were low and, therefore, not used to eliminate variables. By the principal component analysis, an 84.3% accumulation of the variation was observed until the...

Genetic Progress in Winter Wheat Cultivars released in Chile from 1920 to 2000 Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Matus,Iván; Mellado,Mario; Pinares,Marcos; Madariaga,Ricardo; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the major crop in terms of planted area and presents the largest distribution in the country covering a wide range of climatic regions. This study assesses the changes of various agronomic traits of winter wheat cultivars released in Chile between 1920 and 2000. A total of 117 winter accessions, representing 45 old and 72 modern cultivars were tested in a humid Mediterranean-type climate, with irrigation, in 2003. Old cultivars were those released before 1960 and modern ones were those released after 1960. Principal component (PC) analysis using 10 agronomic traits clearly separate modern from old cultivars of winter wheat. Comparing modern cultivars with old ones, plant height have been reduced by 25.6%, but others traits...

Identification of superior genotypes and soybean traits by multivariate analysis and selection index Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Leite,Wallace de Sousa; Unêda-Trevisoli,Sandra Helena; Silva,Fabiana Mota da; Silva,Alysson Jalles da; Mauro,Antonio Orlando Di.
ABSTRACT The selection of superior genotypes of soybean is a complex process, thus exploratory multivariate techniques can be applied to select genotypes analyzing the agronomic traits altogether, increasing the chance of success of a breeding program. Thus, the objective of this study was to select soybean genotypes carrying the RR gene with good agronomical performance through of multivariate analysis and selection index and identify those traits that influence, also verifying the agreement of multivariate techniques and selection index in the selection process. The experiment was conducted in an increased block experimental being evaluated 227 genotypes of F5 generation, which 85 of those were detected to be glyphosate-resistant by PCR. The following...

Martínez G,Ingrid; Zagal V,Erick; Ovalle M,Carlos; Coûteaux,Marie-Madeleine; Stolpe,Neal B; Valderrama V,Natalia.
The ecosystems of the Mediterranean interior dryland of Chile, dominated by an espinal agroecosystem of Acacia caven (Molina) Molina, show low productivity as a result of soil degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate litter decomposition of A. caven and Lolium multiflorum Lam. in espinal ecosystems: well preserved (Wp) 50 to 80%, typical (Pd) 25 to 50%, and degraded (De) with 10 to 25% cover. During 420 d and starting in April 2004 until August 2005, weight loss in litter bags and chemical composition (hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, non-structural components, ash, N, C, C/N ratio, and P) were determined by using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) and the Van Soest protocol. Weight loss ranged from 31 to 52% in L. multiflorum...

Minimum number and best combinations of harvests to evaluate accessions of tomato plants from germplasm banks Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Marim,Bruno Garcia; Carneiro,Pedro Crescêncio Souza; Juhasz,Ana Cristina Pinto; De Luca,Carina A.C.; Valente,Reginaldo Fialho; Guimarães,Marcelo Almeida.
This study presents the minimum number and the best combination of tomato harvests needed to compare tomato accessions from germplasm banks. Number and weight of fruit in tomato plants are important as auxiliary traits in the evaluation of germplasm banks and should be studied simultaneously with other desirable characteristics such as pest and disease resistance, improved flavor and early production. Brazilian tomato breeding programs should consider not only the number of fruit but also fruit size because Brazilian consumers value fruit that are homogeneous, large and heavy. Our experiment was a randomized block design with three replicates of 32 tomato accessions from the Vegetable Germplasm Bank (Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças) at the Federal...
